A different kind of school in Sámara, Costa Rica
In our tucked-away corner of Sámara, Costa Rica — children ages 5–9 follow their own creative path, exploring, experimenting, and bringing ideas to life in ways only they can dream up.
Here, children take chances, chase wild ideas, and find magic in the mess — wind in hair, hands in the earth, and space to ‘be’.
Earthwise Collective is a small learning community (micro school) for families who want to homeschool or choose an alternative path. We support children to grow into who they are, to deepen their connection to the land we live on, to community, and to nurture their curiosity about the world around them.
The kind of learning that truly shapes a person doesn’t come from staying inside the lines.
Real learning starts with wonder. It’s the “why” that spills out mid-walk, the story that forms while their hands are busy making, the sudden urge to figure something out, not because they have to, but because they want to.
At Earthwise, we trade perfection for presence and pressure for possibility. We keep strong foundations at the centre — while protecting what makes children powerful learners in the first place: curiosity, creativity, and the courage to try.
Our approach is simple: we honour childhood. We create space for the children to explore, create, question, and shape their own thinking — with a close-knit, teacher-led team guiding the process, and plenty of space for learning to feel alive.
Ages: 5–9
Maximum group size: 7 children
Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00–15:00
Format: Drop-off
Location: Home setting in Sámara (indoor space + outdoor rancho)
3 teacher-led days + 2 parent-led days
Spanish: 2× per week with Spanish teacher (3 hours total)
Estimated cost: $360/month + materials cost (estimated fee assumes a full pod of 7 children; final fee confirmed once the group is set)
Curriculum: We use the BC curriculum as our academic spine, so children stay on track in core subjects — delivered the Earthwise way, with strong emphasis on storytelling, art, building emotional intelligence, self-awareness, nature connection, values, and real-life skills (with activities adapted across levels so everyone is engaged).
Earthwise Collective is currently in its founding stage.
We’re looking for families who:
- want an alternative to standard schooling - but don’t want to do it alone.
- value community, nature, emotional wellbeing and want that to be present in their child’s schooling.
- can commit for a minimum period of 12 weeks and are ready to get involved (parent days are part of the model).
